Western Kentucky University - BA Degree, 1961 (honors Student and Dean's List).  Received regional scholarship from Tulane University School of Law and attended first year of law school at Tulane (1961-1962).  Transferred to University of Kentucky College of Law.

Special Counsel, United States Senator, Walter D. Huddleston, Senate Select Committee Investigation U.S. Intelligence Agencies (C.I.A. Committee), 1975-1976.

Secretary, Kentucky Department of Justice, Governor's Executive Cabinet, 1976-1979: operated and managed Department of state government which included the Kentucky State Police and the Department of Corrections; all operations including construction, operations, and programs within Department of Corrections.

Concept, Inc., 1986 to 1994.  President of company which purchased, built, operated, and managed private prison facilities.  Six facilities in the State of Texas.  Won first federal private prison contract with the Department of Justice and Bureau of Naturalization and Immigration.  Facility was built in Eloy, Arizona.  Company was sold to Corrections Corporation of America in 1994.

Smith & Helman, Louisville, Kentucky, private practice of law, 1996 to present; specializing in criminal defense and all other types of litigation.

Kentucky Registry of Election Finance, Frankfort, Kentucky, 1999 to 2002, Chairman, oversee election finance for the State of Kentucky.  Resigned position effective December 31, 2002.
