I was born in New York City to immigrant parents and grew up in an English and Spanish-speaking household. I experienced firsthand the struggles facing those who are new to this country. My parents taught me that the only way to get ahead in life was to work hard, be honest, and value education. I have worked hard ever since starting my first job as a paperboy at age 10. I moved to Kentucky in 1989 and was only one of a handful of Latinos living in Louisville. Immediately, I was floored at the extent of genuine kindness and welcoming attitude of the community of Louisville.
I graduated from St. Francis High School in downtown Louisville in 1993. I owe a lot of my success to Headmaster Tom Pike who accepted me into the school and Professor Tom Miron who instilled in me an appreciation for U.S. History, to name a few. I have been lucky enough to have God present me with many mentors in my life who have guided me down the right path. I graduated from the University of Louisville in 1997 with a Bachelor of Arts in History. There, I was inspired by Professor Tom Mackey, Ph.D., who taught me many classes in legal history. I went on to attend the Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville in 2000. I have to give a shout out to Professor Enid Trucios-Haynes for feeding my interest in immigration law through the Brandeis School of Law Immigration Mini-Clinic (1998-2000) and Professor Cedric Powell for continuing to spark my concern for social justice. After graduating from law school, I began my legal career at the Jefferson County Public Defender’s Office. There, I honed my skills defending indigent folks and lived by the motto “Best Legal Representation Money Can’t Buy.” I also gained an appreciation for the value in treating everyone with respect and compassion, regardless of their particular circumstances.
During my time in public service, it became apparent to me that the Latino community of Louisville was underrepresented. So in 2003, I began my own practice. I focused on helping those facing criminal charges, individuals injured in accidents and those seeking help with immigration matters.
In 2007, I was awarded the Louisville Bar Association’s Young Lawyer Award, dedicated to noted Louisville trial attorney Frank E. Haddad, Jr. and given in recognition to one who has “…garnered the respect and admiration of both the judiciary and their colleagues.”
In 2013, I was selected by my peers as a Top Lawyer in the Louisville Magazine.
In 2014, Louisville Magazine selected me again as a “Top Lawyer 2014.” I was quoted, “This is quite an honor for me. The fact that Louisville Magazine included me in its selection of “Top Lawyers 2014,” signals that my constant effort to deliver excellent work has paid off. It is gratifying to be recognized in this way.”
I have a passion for representing and protecting the rights of others and for public service. On November 3, 2015, I would appreciate your vote!
